Valentine’s Day is a love/hate relationship for me. Pun intended. On one hand, I love that it gives us the excuse to spend the day with our loved one. But I hate the over commercialised side to it. That’s why this year I thought, if we’re going to spend money for Valentine’s Day, then we may as well do it to support local businesses.
If you fancy gifting your girl or guy something different to the usual flowers and chocolates on this day, then check out these ideas.
All year round you might pick up your cards from the Card Factory or Clintons, but for a special occasion, you have to check out Card Snobs. The great thing is, that if you don’t live near Childwall, Liverpool, you can order online.
You can browse their instagram to see their amazing stock. They create cards and gift bags for all occasions, but their Valentine’s cards are really unique. If you’re a scouser, or Northerner, then picking up one with the local lingo on will go down a treat!
The Colour Bar
The idea of gifting your other half with a gift voucher for a pamper day at the hair salon is amazing. I noticed my regular salon, The Colour Bar, posted on their instagram about vouchers, which I thought was genius.
I love to think of gifts that you won’t be cheated on with the price. Things like chocolates and flowers are always increased in price for Valentine’s. But, your hair salon won’t up the cost for your appointments.
So start dropping the hints about your new colour you need, or the trim you’ve been meaning to book. Then slide in the major HINT HINT that your salon are offering gift vouchers.
If you’re Wirral based then I really do recommend the girls at The Colour Bar. They’ll have you feeling pampered and brand new.
Broos Art, is a brand new independent online art store. It’s Liverpool based and ran by Ian. They specialise in creating hand drawn and painted cartoon sketches.
The designs are printed on to canvas or card and can be framed to make the perfect gift. Designs can be personalised, and even 2 cartoon themes can be mashed together. The pieces are so unique, and would certainly make a gift to remember. If you check out their instagram page, then you’ll see how amazing the pieces are.
There’s no surprise here, but the Disney designs are my favourite, and are brilliant too.
The Hippy Rose
The final independent business I want to include is, The Hippy Rose. This lovely little Etsy store stocks all handmade items, from house accessories, to make-up bags.
Each item is made with love and joy, and shows off unique style. The travel sets, and eye masks look so cosy. The prints on their new make up bags are summer-travels inspired. When you check out their Etsy page you’ll see the gorgeous orange and pink tassle make up bag, it’s gorgeous.
All their items are so well priced, and would make for a very sentimental gift.
Whenever you buy a gift, it’s always a good feeling picking something you know someone will love. But when you buy a gift from an independent business, it’s a feeling of double goodness, as you have supported an individual.
Each of these businesses offer something different for everyone, and will certainly make for a perfect Valentine’s Day gift. So why not pick up a lovely bunch of Aldi flowers, and with the extra cash you’ve saved, put it towards supporting one of these independent shops.
Will you be buying gifts this V-Day? Or just swapping cards? You can get something for both scenarios from here!
