I’ve always been relatively fit all throughout my life. From dancing since I was little, to being a part of sports teams and enjoying going to the gym.
I have to admit though that my favourite part of going to the gym are the classes. Heading to a gym class keeps me way more motivated than the gym equipment area ever will.
I spent months wasting time going from the cross trainer, to the weight machines, and seeing no results. I head to the gym not only to shape up, which is a personal choice, but also to feel fit. Which is why I love to vary the type of workout I do.
I’ve recently got in to spinning. I’m not going to lie, spinning used to frighten the life out of me. It seemed such a daunting class to do. However I took the plunge and signed up. I now love it. It’s one of the most high intensity classes I do, and it is tough, but I feel so many benefits from it.
An email dropped in to my inbox a few weeks ago from a PR for Nuffield Health. They asked if I wanted to try out their new style ICG Heat Cycle class. I’ve been feeling the fittest I have in while, so I jumped at the chance to try it.
The nearest Nuffield Health to where I live is in Liverpool. It is not far from the city centre, and is really easy to get to by car. It was the first time I had visited a Nuffield Gym, and I was really impressed by it. Memberships for the Liverpool gym are from £40 a month, and this includes gym and pool access, as well as classes.
They offer a really wide range of classes for different abilities and fitness levels. The high intensity ones are the Cycle class and Heat training classes. But there are also low impact classes like Yoga & Pilates, plus Zumba, which can be done at any ability.
What is ICG Heat
The ICG Heat class is a brand new spin class of its kind. It is newly launched in the UK and Nuffield Health currently have exclusive use of this class until September.
The new class has been created to deliver a HIIT class but on a bike. ICG are the makers of top-of-the-line indoor cycles and they are behind the popular Coach By Color® group cycling programme.
The whole class is choreographed to music and certainly puts you through your paces.
The expertly designed bikes allow you to input your body statistics, which will very cleverly determine how much pressure will be behind the peddles in each stage of the class.
This is great for a beginner like me, as I could set the bike to not be as heavy.
My class experience
Although it was daunting heading to a brand new gym environment on my own, I soon felt comfortable once I was on the bike. The class was taken in a separate studio and was fully attended. Since it launched at the beginning of March it has been Liverpool’s most popular class.
The instructor spoke to me about how good the benefits of HIIT training are. In 30 minutes you’ll get your heart rate up, burn more fat & stretch your personal fitness limits more than in any other style of class.
HIIT training is one of my favourite style of classes to do, as you’re only pushing yourself for 30 minutes of your day. I’d never heard of, nor tried a Heat HIIT cycle class though.
The class is programmed to music, which moves you through different levels. You do a mixture of slow cycle, up hill climb, and down hill sprints. These combinations take you through different levels on your computerised system on your bike.
Each level is colour coded and consists of zones IGNITE, HEAT, ON-FIRE & BURN. Depending on what level you’re on, it is visualized on your screen. This motivates you so much, which can only guarantee results.
Another thing that encourages you to push yourself is that the colour of the zone you’re in shows up on the outside of your bike. So your fellow sweaters and the instructor can see if you’re slacking or not.
How I Felt During and After
There was a point in the class that I thought I was going to flop sideways off my bike, however, I only had 10 minutes to go.
Hallelujah for 30 minute gym classes.
If you’re slacking by the end of the class, then don’t worry, you will of pushed yourself so far out of your comfort zone that you deserve to drop down a level.
I absolutely loved the class. It was over so quickly, that I can see how it would become addictive to return to. The instructor was so motivating, and really pushed you on when you were struggling.
Spinning and cycle classes are my own personal fitness challenge. I always wanted to be able to take part in them, and see my fitness develop within them. I can finally see these results, and although I only tried one class, I feel like this really added to my fitness journey.
If you are a member of Nuffield, or are looking for a gym to join, then definitely check them out. Their facilities and range of classes are brilliant.
I’d love to know if this is a style of class you’d like to try. What is your favourite gym class?
