I haven’t written a Film Blog in ages. I’ve missed it a lot. I have been watching so much recently that I can’t keep up with myself and reviewing them for you.
After this post they will be back up on a regular basis.
So, I’m back with my recommendations for the perfect Valentine’s date night in. We will be doing just that this year, staying in with a movie. It will probably be one of these below because I adore all of these.
I call these the films that are the perfect mix of guy & girl comedy. They’re cute, but also not too girly/soppy for some guys. My hubby likes the odd chick flick/romantic comedy, but I’d never catch him saying yes to sitting down with me to watch Legally Blonde or How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.
These ones I think are a great mix of comedy, love, and reality.
What Happens In Vegas
Starring Cameron Diaz & Ashton Kutcher
I remember heading to the cinema to see this movie. I was so excited. Both Cameron Diaz & Ashton Kutcher were so sought after at the time of filming this.
Ste always says that this movie reminds me of him. He says he can see us both in their characters.
It is also blooming hilarious. I love the progression in their relationship, I love how funny both their best friends are & getting to see Vegas on film is always a treat too.
Silver Linings Playbook
Starring Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper
I ADORE THIS MOVIE. Jenninfer Lawrence had not long starred in the Hunger Games, and before this we all recognised Bradley Cooper from The Hangover.
They showcased what they’re made of in this film. It’s heart breaking and heart warming all at the same time. The film is packed full of dry humour & wit. It also focuses on very real tragedies in a unique way, which is why I & the film awarding bodies loved it so much.
The scene near the end of the movie (don’t worry, no spoilers) when they are all at the Dance Competition is one of my favourites from any movie I’ve seen. I cried with laughter at this.
I highly recommend this movie. 10/10.
Sweet Home Alabama
Starring Reese Witherspoon & Patrick Dempsey
There isn’t a Reese Witherspoon movie out there that I don’t like. I am a huge fan of hers, and I love her as a Southern Belle in this film.
This film provided me with the sweetest quote –
“Why would you want to marry me anyhow?”
“So I can kiss you any time I want!”
And also the best soundtrack.
This is probably the most Chick Flick film out of them all, but it still suits me & Ste just fine. It’s comical, romantic & you’ll find yourselves talking in a Southern American accent for the rest of the evening.
The lines & songs are too catchy.
Something’s Gotta Give
Starring Diane Keaton & Jack Nicholson
Quite a few years back I went through a phase of watching loads of Diane Keaton movies, because she is just the best. This is where I discovered Something’s Gotta Give.
Ste hasn’t actually seen this film yet, so this could be the one for our Valentine’s Date Night this year.
The story behind this is Diane Keaton’s daughter (in the movie) brings her much older boyfriend (Jack Nicholson) to their beach house for the weekend. Much to the shock of her mother, as she too wants to spend a quiet, relaxing weekend there also. Jack Nicholson (in the movie) has a heart attack whilst there & prescribed total bed rest. Resulting in both Diane’s & his character gradually falling (unwillingly) for one another.
This is great film to watch with a partner, girl friends, & even your Mum.
The 40 Year Old Virgin
Starring Steve Carell
I’m sorry, but if you haven’t seen this movie at least twice, where have you been?
Steve Carell is an acting & comedy genius, and in this particular film, makes me cry with laughter.
There is a scene where his character gets his chest waxed. This is all real, Steve Carell actually waxed his chest for this scene, and all this screams & heckles are ad-libbed.
In my opinion, out of all these movies, this is the best one for Valentine’s Date Night. It’s packed with comedy, awkward romance, and many heartfelt scenes that leave you really routing for him.
What. A. Movie.
Starring Johnny Depp
This is a romantic classic. I remember the first time I watched this as a young girl, and I instantly wanted to up & move to France & become a Chocolatier.
You know, because I could speak French & make chocolate.
Seriously though, no matter how many times I watch this movie it never gets old. The chocolate & Johnny Depp are delicious as ever. It makes for a great option for a Valentine’s movie, or just a future date night.
As they say in I Love You, Man –
“Do you know the best night I’ve had in the last 5 years, is the night that Zoe and I split a bottle of wine, made a summer salad & watched Chocolat together.”
So here is wishing you all a lovely, cosy night in on Valentine’s Day, or whenever you get chance to have a movie Date Night.
Let me know if you watch any of these, or what your perfect V-Day/Date Night movie of choice is.
